The 2018 PharaohMoans Grenache was picked from a single block in Westside Paso Robles in mid-October. The terroir is similar to the Syrah, with clay and limestone contributing exceptional freshness to the wine. To help integrate the fruit and bring some subtle texture to the wine, we fermented the juice with nearly 30% whole clusters in stainless steel tanks for three weeks. Fresh crushed strawberries exude from the glass, complemented by a smooth mouthfeel and excellent chalky texture. The Grenache will age for 10 years.

Juicy and precise in the mouth, displaying bright, spicy lift to the concentrated raspberry preserve, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors, which steadily turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Shows a sexy lavender pastille quality on the strikingly long, sappy finish, which is framed by velvety, slow-building tannins. "Brilliant red. Heady, intensely perfumed aromas of red fruit preserves, incense and potpourri, lifted by a spicy pepper nuance. Stains the palate with deeply concentrated yet lithe, spice-laced Chambord and cherry cola flavors; mineral and lavender pastille notes build in the glass. Shows outstanding tension and focus on the subtly tannic finish, which emphatically repeats the floral and spice notes. There's something eerily Pinot Noir-like going on here."

As you are aware, the PharaohMoans label is a replica of the Rosetta Stone, which in 1822 finally decoded the hieroglyphic script. The dull text (which refers to tax breaks for priests) was inscribed in three languages, Greek, demotic Egyptian and hieroglyphics. We've just learned about a recent discovery at the British Museum of a fourth language on the Rosetta stone. The relic was fought over by French and British troops at the end of the Napoleonic wars, and finally taken to London. On the side of the stone, painted in English, one can read, "Captured in Egypt by the British Army in 1801." We think our English label inspired them to check!
